2016 College and Essay Scholarships will open on December 10, 2015

 

It’s that time of year again. We at teenNow California are excited and proud to announce that the 2016 College and Essay Scholarship Awards will be open to accept essays and applications beginning December 10, 2015!

 

Scholarships are for pregnant and parenting teens that will graduate from high school this year and plan on going on to college. If you work with young people that fit this description, this is your opportunity to help them get started on their path to a better future. Please check back for the application form  to distribute to these seniors. Let’s support these fabulous youth and get them on their way to college!

 

teenNow California has been awarding scholarships annually since 1985. We are proud of our graduates success, their resilience and strength.

teenNow Welcomes Kayla Wilson as new board President

Welcome Kayla Wilson, MBA as the new Board President

 

teenNow California welcomes our new Board President, Kayla Wilson, MBA. Kayla has served on the Board for 3 years.  She has served as the Secretary/Treasurer for 2 years and participated on the Scholarship, Fund Development and Membership Committees. She brings a wealth of experience in non-profits, developing and implementing programs, evaluation, youth development and community capacity building. She has worked for the Fresno County Office of Education for over 15 years. She has developed, managed and evaluated programs targeting both youth and adults. She has monitored programs throughout the State. In addition, she has extensive experience working directly with teens in a leadership and mentoring capacity.

 

Kayla remarked, “I am honored to be elected as the new Board President for teenNow California. The Executive Director, Pam Kitagawa, and the entire Board are dedicated to ensuring that the youth in California have access to exemplary reproductive health services and education. We believe in supporting our adolescent parents through systemic support and change. Teen parents can absolutely be successful students, parents and members of our society, especially when the adults who support this unique group of parents has the skillset and knowledge of understanding the specific needs of this population.

 

“California has seen a steady decline in the rate of teen pregnancy. However, there are still communities where the rates is 2 to 3 times higher that the state average. Sexually transmitted infections are a serious health issue for teens. teenNow California is committed to providing technical assistance and professional development to: school administrators and employees; health care providers and counselors; nonprofit organizations; and youth in the areas of:

  • Creating safe relationships and spaces for youth, including LGBT youth
  • Mandated HIV/AIDS and comprehensive sex education in schools
  • School climate
  • Serving and supporting teen parents and their children
  • Adolescent brain development
  • Impact of trauma on our youth
  • Foster care youth
  • And a plethora of other topics we know are important to the dedicate providers committed to ensuring the youth in this state receive the best health and emotional health.
